Ink drawings

I admire the harmony of the Renaissance and use old painting techniques to create depth and magic in the picture, to apply ideas from drawing and engraving to painted works, to mix techniques and discover new effects. I pay special attention to details.

Portraits of saints are intended to serve a practical purpose and to help deepen the presence of prayer in daily life. They are also unique household decorations that add to a sense of comfort and security in the house.

As gifts for baptisms, birthdays, first communions, confirmation, weddings or vows, these works of art convey warmth and benevolence through the saint chosen by the giver.

Oil painting

I work with old Flemish painting techniques, a complex system with many transparent and translucent layers of paint that allow a feeling of saturation, depth and light to emerge from the picture. This creates a mysterious aura. I am inspired by early medieval painting with its simplicity and apparent unreality. At the same time, I try to incorporate a contemporary element into my art, to reveal new things, to create portraits that are not just images of bygone times, but speak to us in the here and now.

School of Byzantine Icon Painting

The atelier teaches icon painting according to the rules of traditional iconography, inspired by the method of work carried out by Irina Gorbunova-Lomax. Studying at Atelier lasts 4 years. Practical training is carried out in the form of weekly three-hour painting classes in the studio and independent work at home. In addition to practical training, workshop participants attend monthly lectures that provide a structured outline of the most important issues in the history and iconography of early Christian, Byzantine and Old Russian art.

Iconography

On this course, we strive to create conditions that will allow you to  get acquainted with the tradition of the Byzantine and Old Russian icons and start your own path in dialogue with this tradition.

We will master the technology of egg tempera; learn what pigments are; and make icon paintings. We will prepare boards for icons almost like in ancient times; we will learn different ways of applying paint and other secrets of the old Masters.
In the programme, we acquire artistic skills (colour, composition and perspective in an icon) and go through increasingly complex iconographic topics step by step. During the first year we will master:
• General technical skills, properties of materials
• Exercises for the development of hands and eyes
• Elements of an ornament
• Elements of a landscape
• Draperies
• Carnation (personal letter)

Thanks to small groups, work with participants is individual. Selected works of each participant are presented at the end of the year at an exhibition.

Egg tempera

Get acquainted with the medieval technique of egg tempera. Master the technology and methods. Learn what pigments are and how to make paint with them.
Learn different ways of applying paint; find out what the “singing line”, glazing and other secrets of the old Masters are.

Each lesson includes:
- practical mastering of a particular technique, graphic motif or stage of implementation of this motif; and individual consultation.

Learning stages with a gradual increase in complexity:

• General technical skills, material properties, work with pigments; exercises for hand and eye development
• Ornamental elements
• Landscape elements
• Draperies

Unlike teaching methods adopted in Western Europe, where egg tempera is associated exclusively with icon painting, our programme shifts the emphasis onto general composition and drawing. As you master the technique, you will independently determine your own preferences and use your newfound skills in your own creative work.

About Us:

Inna Reut
I have been involved in Byzantine icon art for over 20 years. I am a graduate of Art History from the Belarusian Academy of Arts in Minsk. The mysterious beauty of ancient icons captured me from a young age, growing up on the border of two cultures - Orthodox and Catholic - and there was no way to paint icons in the secular world of the USSR.

Later I was fortunate enough to study iconography at the Dominican Monastery in Warsaw while studying the Christian East. I went on to the Atelier St. Elias, where, in addition to painting icons according to the canons of traditional iconography, I studied the method of teaching icon painting.

I am interested in questions of tradition and modernity, today it is allowed to deviate from canonical art and not to lose the beauty of the icon, its deep spiritual meaning.

Adele Reut
I am a graduate of the Warsaw Academy of Arts, also studied at the Warsaw School of Photography and Graphic Design and the British Higher School of Art.

I work with old techniques of Flemish painting, a complex system with many transparent and translucent layers of paint that allow a feeling of saturation, depth and light from the picture. This creates a mysterious aura.

I'm mostly into Western religious painting and graphics and I work a lot with the Catholic Church around the world. I am inspired by early medieval painting with its simplicity and apparent unreality.

At the same time, I try to incorporate a contemporary element into my art, to reveal new things, to create portraits that are not just pictures of bygone times, but speak to us in the here and now.
